Say it isn't so

I understand sports are a business, hell my company holds a license with all four major sports leagues. I'm a huge baseball and football fan and I've seen some decisions that made the fans upset but were mainly because the teams are a business first. Losing John Smoltz would be high on the list of things that make me upset. I didn't like losing Glavine or Maddux or Dale Murphy for that matter. Please stay with us Smoltzie.

I bet you would have loved Doyle Alexander, too. Until about, oh, 1991.

At least in my experience, I think it's got less to do with loving the player and more with the realization that your team sucks and probably won't be good again for a while. I liked Kevin Tapani, adored Chuck Knoblauch, and tolerated AJ Pierzynski, and while I was sad to see them go, I didn't mind so much if it meants we'd get something good in return. Especially with AJ.

Scott Erickson, on the other hand, was bad and a dick, so I was happy to see him go, even if all we got was Scott Klingenbeck and Kimera Barte....
